As you celebrate the 4th of July, remind your children of the history of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. You might focus then on the flag as a symbol of our country. Tell them that the 50 stars represent our 50 states, that the red and white stripes represent the 13 original states, then called colonies.
Talk about what the colors mean. Blue means we should be brave. White means we should be pure and do what’s right. Red means we should work for fairness and justice for all people. We don’t have to do this on our own. Jesus will help us be brave, do what’s right, and be kind and fair to people.
You can begin the fun with flag waffles. Square waffles work best, but round ones can work, too. Children can put blueberries in several squares in the upper left of the waffle. Then place strawberry halves or red raspberries in the “holes” with whipped cream in between to create stripes.
Food fun can continue with lunch or dinner. Create a flag on a tray using blue tortilla chips in the upper left corner to form a square. Children can cut out star shapes in slices of mozzarella, Munster, or some other white cheese and place on the tortilla chips. Place rows of hot dogs in buns to form the stripes of the flag.
For dessert, children can make fruit kabobs with raspberries or strawberries, alternating with bananas or marshmallows. Half the kabobs should leave room for 4-5 blueberries at the top. Place kabobs on tray to look like a flag, with the kabobs containing blueberries on the left to form a blue square.
Thank God for our country, our freedom, the food He gives us, His salvation, and for His presence with us always.
Happy 4th of July!
