This year we celebrate Easter on April 20. That’s near the last date Easter could fall on, April 25.
The date is based on the Jewish calendar which uses lunar cycles. Easter is the first Sunday after the full moon on or after the spring equinox, which means it could be any date between March 22 and April 25.
So this year, you have a few more days than in many years to buy new clothes, fill Easter baskets, and dye eggs (or save up to buy any of those things).
And maybe the temperature will be warmer, unlike the year my Easter dress was sleeveless and it was 36 degrees!
Easter is late this year, according to our calendar. But the original Easter was not late. God tells us in Galatians 4 that when the time was right, Christ was born. Christ, Himself God, always did God’s will in God’s way in God’s time. Luke 9 tells us that He went steadfastly to Jerusalem, knowing what awaited Him there.
As the Jewish nation observed Passover, the final Passover Lamb, God’s Son, was slain for the sins of all people. Jesus was not late for the crucifixion.
But Jesus told his disciples that on the third day, He would rise again. And so He did. Jesus was not late for the resurrection.
And it’s not too late for you to join in that Easter celebration. Hebrews tells us that while it is today, don’t harden your hearts, but let the Son of God be your Savior.
Easter may come late this year, but you don’t have to be too late to be part of God’s resurrection family.
Happy Easter!
